This seminar is about studying transportation at York University. 2 speakers will talk about the academic and professional path they experienced during and after their studies.

Dr. Kevin Gingerich is an assistant professor in transportation at York University and is the advising faculty member who represents ITE York University Student Chapter

Erik Nevland is the founding president of the ITE York U chapter in 2018 and is now part of ITE Toronto.

Dr. Kevin Gingerich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering with a focus on transportation studies. Kevin received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Windsor, during which time he was awarded an NSERC PGS-D scholarship. His work was conducted for the Cross-Border Institute where he focused on Canada-U.S. trade via truck data processing, analysis, and modelling.



Kevin’s research interests include transportation network modelling, freight transportation, GIS spatial analysis, and discrete choice modelling. He has previously completed projects for organizations such as Transport Canada, MTO, and Union Gas. His research work has been disseminated in widely respected journals including Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, the Journal of Transport Geography, and Transportation Research Record.



Kevin is eager to teach and work with Lassonde students at an exciting time in the transportation field as it evolves rapidly with emerging technologies, increasing data integration, and shifting cultural trends. This developing landscape provides us with new tools to help understand current trends and plan for a sustainable future.

Erik is a Transportation Planning Engineer working as a Project Manager at the Region of Peel. He completed a Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering (2020) at York University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (2018) and a Certificate in Professional Communication (2017) at the University of Saskatchewan. Erik is registered as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, a Professional Transportation Planner, and a Pre-Candidate Member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. Erik is the Vice President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Toronto Section. Erik's areas of interest include transportation planning, transportation safety, freight transportation, geographic information systems (GIS), data analytics, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
