Topic: Road Safety Experience in the Caribbean Countries and the Challenges in Meeting 2030 United Nations Global Plan
Summary: The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island and unincorporated territory of the United States, was one of the hundred countries that participated in the worldwide initiative of the First Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 following the resolution adopted by the United Nations. Two Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSP) have been implemented by the Puerto Rico Highways and Transportation Authority and the Department of Transportation and Public Works during this decade and significant improvements in reducing fatalities and serious injuries have been achieved during this period.
According to the Puerto Rico Highway Traffic Safety Commission, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the fatalities and serious injuries increased. During 2022 a reduction in these statistics has been observed dramatically as well as in other countries.
This presentation will primarily address the lessons learned during the implementation of the two SHSPs in Puerto Rico during the first 10 years, and briefly discuss other experiences in selected Caribbean countries after the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the expected challenges in meeting the 2030 United Nations Global Plan.

Topic: Academy, Mobility and Road Safety: Achievements and Challenges
Summary: Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), the state university, has been involved with the road safety projects that the Dominican Republic has been working on for the last 10 years. It is the second country with the most deaths by car accidents in the American Region. The university, through its transportation program for undergraduates, has been leading some of the most exciting projects to tackle this problem that killed 3,204 people just in 2019. The presentation will show what we have achieved so far through the campaigns and the effort of our students and faculty members, as well as the challenges we have ahead and the proposals we've been working on to reduce deaths by car accidents in the Dominican Republic.
